Contemporary individuals today carry multiple identities, multiple expectations, and multiple possible versions of themselves, often seeking safety in things that may not truly save them, but only temporarily soothe them. Following this idea, Sonja Lundin and Dragana Lukić use this exhibition to open the question: in what ways do we make decisions when we are under stress, vulnerable, or pressured by society? Their installations of printed textile sculptures and an artist’s book shape a space in which personal experience becomes a shared language. Each vest, as well as the words in the book, represents an intimate record of an inner world through fragments of thoughts, emotions, and memories that build an unfiltered narrative about the contemporary experience of insecurity. The vests here do not truly save us, but symbolically. They become a metaphor for the emotional calm we seek today through everyday mechanisms of escape: doomscrolling, binge-watching, constant planning without action, self-help content without real change, toxic productivity that leads to burnout, online validation, or aesthetically arranging life for social media. All of this gives us the apparent feeling: “I am doing something. I am controlling my life.” And often, what we call safety is only SAFE — Safety As a Fleeting Escape. In her novel The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath uses the metaphor of the fig tree to portray the overwhelming nature of life’s possibilities, which leads to decision paralysis. We recognize that same feeling today in the artists Sonja Lundin and Dragana Lukić, who, through this exhibition, share a similar psychological and generational space. At the same stage of life, between their late twenties and early thirties, an excessive number of choices and the pressure to “choose the right path” become a shared experience of anxiety, but also a space of encounter and empowerment. This is why Sylvia’s fig tree does not appear here as a quotation from the past, but as a mirror of the present. The choices have multiplied, the contexts are more contemporary, yet the feeling that every decision carries the loss of all other possibilities remains the same. The outcome of this exhibition lies in the value of working together: when two perspectives on the world unite, responsibility is shared, and insecurity becomes lighter through dialogue. Savremen čovek danas istovremeno nosi više identiteta, više očekivanja i više mogućih verzija sebe, često tražeći sigurnost u pojavama koje ga možda ne spašavaju, već samo trenutno umiruju. Na tom tragu Sonja Lundin i Dragana Lukić ovom izložbom otvaraju pitanje: na koje načine donosimo odluke kada smo pod stresom, ranjivi ili pod pritiskom društva? Njihove instalacije štampanih tekstilnih skulptura i umetnička knjiga oblikuju prostor u kojem lično iskustvo postaje zajednički jezik. Svaki prsluk, kao i reči u knjizi, predstavlja intimni zapis unutrašnjeg sveta kroz fragmente misli, emocija i sećanja koji grade nefiltriran narativ o savremenom iskustvu nesigurnosti. Prsluci nas ovde ne spašavaju stvarno, već simbolično. Oni postaju metafora emocionalnog smiraja koji danas pronalazimo u svakodnevnim mehanizmima bekstva: doomscrollingu, binge watchingu, stalnom planiranju bez akcije, self-help sadržaju bez stvarne promene, toksičnoj produktivnosti koja vodi u burnout, online validaciji ili estetskom sređivanju života za društvene mreže. Sve to daje prividan osećaj: „Radim nešto. Kontrolišem život.“ A često je to samo Samo Privremena Aluzija Sigurnosti — SPAS. Silvija Plat u romanu The Bell Jar kroz metaforu smokvinog drveta prikazuje preplavljenost životnim mogućnostima koja vodi u paralizu odlučivanja. Taj isti osećaj danas prepoznajemo i kod umetnica Sonje Lundin i Dragane Lukić, koje u okviru ove izložbe dele sličan psihološki i generacijski prostor. U istoj životnoj dobi, između kasnih dvadesetih i ranih tridesetih, prevelik broj izbora i pritisak da se „izabere pravi put“ postaju zajedničko iskustvo anksioznosti, ali i prostor susreta i osnaživanja. Zato se Silvijino smokvino drvo ovde ne pojavljuje kao citat iz prošlosti, već kao ogledalo sadašnjosti. Izbori su umnoženi, konteksti su savremeniji, ali osećaj da svaka odluka nosi gubitak svih drugih ostaje isti. Ishod ove izložbe je vrednost rada u zajedništvu: kada se dva pogleda na svet ujedine, odgovornost se deli, a nesigurnost postaje lakša u dijalogu. Applied Art Belgrade Year: 2023 The exhibition entitled "World within worlds" showcases the outcome of connecting scientific research and technological innovations within the realm of art. This inaugural exhibition in a series is a part of the research portfolio of the Center for Public Policy Research (Re:People). It was created through a partnership between Re:People and the Institute for Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGI) at the University of Belgrade, with a simple yet crucial goal: to promote sustainable economic development in Serbia. Inspired by this challenge, the curator of the exhibition, Ivan Šuković, invited artists Emilija Radojičić, Sonja Lundin, Jovana Čavorović, Dragana Lukić, and Emir Šehanović to explore new interpretations in various artistic media with their works. Through their works, they aim to create critical and conceptual tension by juxtaposing elements rooted in scientific foundations. The exhibition elucidates nature as the absolute origin of reality, relying on scientific methods and precise experiments. All artworks incorporate bio-pigments derived from microorganisms found in diverse natural habitats in Serbia. Bio-pigments, as natural substitutes for artificial pigments, offer various economic and technological advantages. Consequently, the conceptual framework of this project delves into the impact of natural heritage on our way of thinking. The artistic presentation is based on research led by Dr. Jasmina Nikodinović-Runić, a biochemist from IMGGI. This scientific project was established on the principle of isolating live bacteria, specifically streptomycetes, from various locations in Serbia. Their subsequent life cycle in laboratory conditions is transformed into pigments that can be applied to materials. Despite this strong scientific foundation, the exhibition "Some Other Places" doesn't solely offer a detached scientific perspective. It also provides an emotional and personal connection that arises from its origin filtered through experimentation. Heritage and topographical remnants of life are the focal points of artistic research. This exhibition is the result of the continuous research efforts of the Center for Public Policy Research (Re:People) aimed at identifying the leading innovative economic and scientific sectors in Serbia. As part of this ongoing process, the scientific project led by Dr. Jasmina Nikodinović-Runić has demonstrated the transformative potential of bio-pigments in various sectors of the economy. Re:People plans to organize annual exhibitions that explore this seemingly unexpected connection between art and science. ----------------------------------- In my installation, "Testament," I explore the dynamics between temporality, society, and ecology. The choice of glass as the primary material was deliberate, as its transparency facilitates an interaction with the surrounding environment, and it’s inspired by lab equipment. This project has been a thought-provoking journey, centering on the concept of sustainable development within artistic practice. "Testament" delves into the process of pigment formation, transitioning from hourglass with agar with streptomycetes to hourglass with pigment and ultimately hourglass with colored sand. Through this project, I've gained an understanding of bacteria as a valuable resource. Neka druga mestaMuzej primenjene umetnosti Beograd 2023&nbsp; Izložba pod nazivom „Neka druga mesta“ prikazuje rezultat povezivanja naučnih istraživanja i tehnoloških inovacija smeštenih u svet umetnosti. Ova izložba, prva u nizu, deo je istraživačkog portfolija Centra za istraživanje javnih politika (Re:People). Nastala je u partnerstvu između Re:People i&nbsp;Instituta za molekularnu genetiku&nbsp;i genetičko inženjerstvo (IMGGI), Univerziteta u Beogradu, sa jednostavnim ali važnim ciljem – da podstakne održivi ekonomski razvoj Srbije. Izložba objašnjava prirodu kao apsolutno poreklo stvarnosti zasnovano na naučnim metodama i preciznim eksperimentima.&nbsp; Svi umetnički radovi su protkani bio-pigmentima, mikroorganizmima koji su preuzeti sa različitih prirodnih staništa u Srbiji. Bio-pigmenti kao prirodna&nbsp; zamena za veštačke pigmente imaju razne ekonomske i tehnološke prednosti te samim tim, konceptualna uokvirenost ovog projekta dotiče pitanje efekta prirodnog nasleđa kao načina razmišljanja.&nbsp; Umetnički prikaz je utemljen u istraživanju koje predvodi biohemičarka dr. Jasmina Nikodinović-Runić&nbsp;sa IMGGI.&nbsp;Ovaj naučni projekat je uspostavljen po principu preuzimanja žive bakterije – streptomicete sa različitih lokaliteta u Srbiji. Njihov kasniji životni ciklus u laboratorijskim uslovima se revalorizuje kao proces produktivne transformacije u pigmente koji postaju aplikativni na materijalima. This generation is distinguished by their complete dependence on digital media and platforms, which must be taken into consideration when analyzing their works in traditional art disciplines, as they often consist of multimedia components. Despite the numerous difficulties this generation faced while growing up, including economic crisis, wars, terrorism, and the COVID 19 pandemic, which has affected the end of their academic education, the largest challenge they faced was being educated by the previous generation, who grew up with television and print media. This gap in the formatting of visual content was the biggest challenge for me in terms of pedagogy. Dragana Lukić is an artist for whom art does not serve to acquire and confirm social status, but to configure ontological determination in real life. We can say about Dragana that she studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, but nothing more than that, because we can fall into the problem of formalism. &nbsp; Instead, her work should be defined by a specific time frame, as she believes that everything can be placed in a certain time frame. Her works are not just prints but graphic representations, even lexically formalized sets of concepts or visual content are a form of graphic representation, instead of an ordered and lexically expressed thought or meaning. In her Naïve Set Theory, every piece of information, no matter how trivial, is given importance. By utilizing statistics, she elevates trivial facts extracted from a pre-defined whole and contextualizes them in a monumental way. This method, thanks to its sensitivity and artistic suggestiveness, has become a paradigm of new art.” D.A. The work, inspired by the process of weaving, creates a whole by bringing together small dots of time. The work is named "Bookmark" because it mimics the markers of time found in book bookmarks. Temporality, the philosophical concept of limited and changing existence in time, guides the creation process and record keeping of the moments when the working day ends. The five-year study is expressed through an artistic metaphor, a "weaver's chronograph" made from a painting frame and dryer used for printing graphics. Weaving serves as a barrier between the artist and time and the work is based on the organization of collected content that poses an artistic problem.&nbsp; That's how my work got the name "Bookmark," because the time markers I subsequently recorded in the work closely mimic book bookmarks. In a broader sense, a book is any large-scale language document that is fixed in writing and is recorded on easily portable material. The involvement of a letter and appropriate writing material was required for the discovery of a book. A book is a portable physical object as well as a body of immaterial representation or intellectual object, which material signs are written or drawn lines. The weaving process is based on the same mathematical principles as the graphic process. From this idea , I decided to create a digital graphic sheet that encapsulates the essence of my artistic expression. It consists of five black and white prints created as a series of dots in the first phase of the project. The next phase involved randomly selecting one of the dots, determining its color spontaneously, and overlapping it with another dot. The contrast between countability and plurality, and the infinite combinations that can be formed from dots, means there is no set edition number. Instead, each iteration of the process offers a new experience. Breaking away from traditional graphic production methods gave me the courage to explore the mathematical aspects of printmaking even further. Create your own! Move the signs around. Usually when we paint, we paint the group of tiny elements using one shade. The camera was invented with the aim of replicating the human eye and capturing reality. Since then, we have the hyperrealism as a movement. The concept of "context of infinity" while observing the landscapes such as the sea, sky, and meadows inspired me to conduct this research. Due to the comprehension of the viewing subject, the human eye perceives the broader picture while the camera focuses on finer details like color, texture, shape, and form of the builiding element, providing insight into the system being observed. After studyng The Hilbert curve (a&nbsp;continuous fractal space-filling curve) I reliazed that I can show what are the finer details of the observed subject. The eye sees according to the saccade phenomenon, making the eye never still, and creates a seen image from randomly seen elements. This fast movement creates the illusion of a blurred image. The human eye is sensitive to color, and the retina has cells that process color information and send it to the brain. Peripheral vision sees color poorly as the rods (cells for black and white info) are located at the edge of the retina and the cones (for color info) are in the center. The work in this category extracts the dominant color in photoshop to make the photo resemble the color seen by the eye. The work is based on a study of the textual and visual contents of the Zenit magazine. Because it was a magazine with a specific structure and its founder religiously followed the Zenith manifesto, I wanted to find out how much his personal life influenced the content. As a result, the entire content is digitally transformed into a grid of squares. Each square depicts one issue. The square unit relationships are based on the relationships of black and white, written and unwritten, print and paper. The work depicts the map legend of 34 magazines, ranging from issue 1 to issue 43. (Several issues are bundled into a single publication.) Legend is a type of folklore that consists of a story about human actions that the narrators and listeners understood or believed happened in human history. Artists from four partner institutions in Belgrade, Krakow, Alabama, and Trier participated, including professors and students. The project was led by the Academy of Fine Arts, Jan Metejko in Krakow and funded by NAWA, the Polish national agency for international academic partner programs. I participated in the project during their third year at the Faculty of Fine Arts and attended a seven-day workshop. The workshop was held in a remote area in Zakopane, Poland and focused on exploring the relationship between nature and art. My work "Imperceptible" shows a coordinate system and an image. The stone that was used during the creation of the work as a foundation and as the very beginning of the creative process was used as a template for the painting, and then it was set to the coordinates for the final stage. The stone bears with it everything in nature that surrounds us, that gives us a foundation and safeguards our memory. Stone is the trace of our foundation that remains unseen. To paint the surface surrounding stone elevates and adds to the trace that represents that which man leaves in his foundation after himself. The stone symbolism that appears in this work is stone as a witness of time - locked in the ground, undeterred. This work exemplifies the inferiority of man in the face of the stone. By attempting to understand all that lies in a stone's essence or memory, man accentuates his own helplessness. Therefore man can only ever reflect on that which he has added to history. Anything before his era represents a void lacking his presence. I left my original artwork at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.
